January Reset: Setting Realistic Eating Goals for a Healthy Start to the Year

January is often seen as a month of fresh starts, new goals, and a renewed commitment to health. After the indulgences of the holiday season, many people set ambitious resolutions around food, fitness, and overall well-being. However, too many restrictive goals can lead to burnout before February even begins. Instead, focusing on balance eating habits and realistic goals can set the foundation for long-term success.

My best tip to be successful in January is make sure you have achievable eating goals, and build balance, a healthy diet that lasts well beyond the first month of the year.

Why January is the Perfect Time for a Reset

The start of a new year feels symbolic—a blank slate where you can realign your priorities and focus on self-care. After weeks of holiday parties, sugary treats, and indulgent meals, many people feel sluggish, bloated, and unmotivated. A January reset isn’t about guilt or punishment; it’s about gently guiding your body back to balance and nourishing it with wholesome foods.

A January reset is not about extreme diets or eliminating entire food groups. Instead, it’s about creating habits that are manageable and enjoyable. Think of it as a time to refocus on foods that fuel your body, provide energy, and support your overall health goals. I’ve also learned the importance of gut health.

Setting Realistic Eating Goals

One of the biggest mistakes people make in January is setting overly ambitious or vague eating goals. “I’m going to eat clean every day” or “I’ll never eat sugar again” are examples of resolutions that often fall apart quickly. Instead, focus on goals that are specific, measurable, and sustainable.

The best way to set yourself up for success is to meal prep and plan. My favorite way to meal prep meats is with a sous vide. You can cook your meat in a water bath, keep sealed in the fridge until you are ready to use. Chicken can be kept for up to 10 days. You can read more about sous vide here.
